I bet the headline caught your attention but this is not an offer of hampers for you but rather a request. Since it was launched, the Suffolk Coastal Debt Centre has offered its clients a special Christmas treat – a hamper of food and other seasonal niceness – to help defray the costs of this special time of the year, which can be terrifying if you are enslaved to debt.
In the past, St John’s has done this all by itself but this year other churches are involved and our allocation is for four households (bear in mind that many of our clients are single Mums, deserted by their partners). And so we need four “hampers” worth of goodies please!
The sorts of things that you might consider donating include the following:
TINS of Veg, Beans, Soup, Fruit….plus….Rice, Pasta, Pasta sauce, Curry, Curry Sauce, Biscuits, Cheese Crackers, CHOCOLATES, Christmas Pudding, Custard, Corned Beef, Christmas Cake, More Cake, Pickles, Jam, Peanut Butter, Tuna, Tea, Coffee, Squash, Christmas Crackers, Christmas Decorations.
Please NO frozen, chilled or fresh foods (anything that will go off over a period of a month or more). If you would prefer to make a financial contribution, that would be OK as well. In order to do so, please contact Doug (email@example.com) to get the bank details of St John’s PCC, making sure to reference the fact that your contribution is for CAP (i.e. our Debt Centre).
Here is a picture of last year’s phenomenal response to our appeal:
We need to organise this during the month of November, so that the hampers can be packaged up and delivered during the first half of December. Since the second lockdown has started, there is now only one option for dropping stuff off: during the times that St John’s Church is open for private prayer (Mondays: 10am to 2pm & Thursdays: 12 noon to 2pm). Why not come to the church and pray for those we are and will be supporting at the same time. If that is not convenient, for whatever reason, then please contact Karen (firstname.lastname@example.org) who will sort out a solution!
Past experience tells us that the Christmas hampers are amongst the most powerfully moving acts of Christian love that we do during the year and this year has been absolutely brutal for our Debt clients for all the obvious reasons. Please show your (and Christ’s) love for those in need this (not very) festive season. Thank you. Nic (email@example.com)
