40 Days of Prayer
|As a benefice we’re on a journey exploring where God is calling us to as we enter this new season. Across all the congregations here we have many things in common and together can work for the kingdom of God. Together we will be looking at a vision for the benefice: our common purpose, values, and DNA. Once we have established our ‘why’ and core identity we can look at what that looks like in practise in terms of worship, mission, and discipleship. This isn’t about changing what we do, although some things may change as we discern where God is calling us.|
We could probably come up with a vision ourselves and talk about what we think is important but what is necessary is that it is God’s plan and heart for our benefice. Therefore, we are calling everyone to 40 days of prayer.
Beginning on Sunday 30th May (the Sunday after Pentecost) 40 days of prayer leads us nicely to Friday 9th July which just happens to be the beginning of the weekend away.
During those 40 days we will have our regular opportunities to pray together: Sunday worship, Wednesday morning prayer, Thursday afternoons, and in homegroups for example.
We’re having a Whole Church Prayer Event on the evening of Wednesday 23rd June to gather us together to pray in person. We’re also having a 24 hour call to prayer beginning at 10:00am on Saturday 3rd July and finishing at 10:00 on Sunday 4th July. We will organise a rota for a 24 hour prayer event so that people can sign up to a particular time slot so that the entire time period is covered.
If prayer is something you struggle with why not try the following:
1 – Make a cup of tea or coffee.
2 – Turn your phone to aeroplane mode or turn it off.
3 – Find somewhere comfy to sit.
4 – Say something simple like ‘God, you are always here. I am here now, present in this moment. Will you speak to me now?’
5 – Sit, in the quiet, for 5 minutes.
Prayer can be as simple as that. You will most likely find that your mind wanders, that is alright! When your mind wanders just say ‘God, this is on my mind, I give it to you.’
You might feel or hear nothing in those 5 minutes. You might feel a sense of peace. You might experience the full measure of Jesus’ joy within you.
This is an opportunity for the whole benefice to pray individually and together for God’s heart and vision for our benefice. Primarily this is about listening to God. You don’t have to report back when you are praying but we will give opportunities to feed back anything you might be hearing from God (be it a picture, a particular Bible verse, a phrase, or something you just can’t get out of your head).
This is not about us coming up with a vision and asking God to bless it. This is about all of us listening to God and discerning where we are being called in this new season.
If you have any questions, ideas, or anything that comes to mind please do get in touch with Dave.
Let’s be intentional about praying. Let’s take the opportunity we have in those 40 days to try new ways of praying, new ways of seeking intimacy with Jesus. Just 5 minutes a day across 40 days will make a difference, why not start practising now?
