From the external view, it looks like St John the Baptist hasn’t changed for decades. Well, no one would say that if they visited and looked on the inside.
A long-term project has just been completed, which has seen the removal of the ancient, decorative but very uncomfortable pews, making room for individual cushioned and moveable chairs; seating for the twenty first century! Now the short talks feel short again!!
Aside from issues of comfort, “moveable chairs” means that the entire church space can be cleared or rearranged to cater for events not best served by parallel benches.
